Rex Lawrence Lane Rex Lawrence Lane passed away on Friday, February 13, 2015 at the age of ninety-seven (97) years and five (5) months. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 17 at 11:00 a.m. at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. A visitation will be held an hour before the service. A light lunch will follow the service. Private interment is at Wildwood Cemetery in Cohasset, MN. Rex was born and spent most of his adult life in Minnesota's Iron Range including the towns of Kelly Lake, Hibbing, Marble, and Grand Rapids. Rex worked for U.S. Steel for 47 years. He ran steam, diesel, and electric shovels for over 25 years. He was also a pit foreman for many years and ended his work career as the Maintenance Supervisor for the Trout Lake Mill, at the time one of the world's largest natural ore processing plants. During WWII he was classified as Essential Industry and ordered to continue working in the iron mines as a shovel operator. Rex was active in the First Church of God of Grand Rapids. He was known and admired for his work ethic, simple faith, and love of life. He was competent in the skills of nearly every trade from concrete work and plastering to electrical and carpentry skills. He built his own home in Grand Rapids and did all the work from drawing his own blueprints and sawing the timber for construction to building the cabinetry and doing the finishing work inside the house. His passions and hobbies included camping, fishing, hunting, taxidermy, and woodwork. He was an avid reader and an excellent woodcarver. Rex enjoyed family, was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He left us with many cherished memories. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, June Ruth (Newton) Lane, his parents, seven brothers, two sisters, and one grandson.

Surviving Rex are his children; Donna (Lawrence) Birch, Larry (Dee), and Barry (Terry); seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; a brother Jack (Shirley); and his extended family. In lieu of flowers the family prefers that memorials be sent to the American Diabetes Foundation in remembrance of Rex L. Lane.
