Richard James Noel, 63, resident of rural Frazee, MN, died Friday, January 3, 2014 surrounded by his family. Richard "Rich" was born December 29, 1950 in Detroit Lakes. Raised by his maternal grandparents, Arthur and Elva Peterson, Rich grew up and spent his childhood in Detroit Lakes and Fargo. On March 3, 1969, Rich married the love of his life, Deanna Guhlke in Sisseton, SD. After marriage Rich attended vocational school in Detroit Lakes, earning his welding and business certificates. Rich worked in residential construction throughout the Detroit Lakes and Fargo areas for close to 20 years. After spending a few years out west, they returned to the lakes area in 1987, purchasing a home by Little Toad Lake near Frazee. Rich enrolled at NDSU and graduated with a Political Science degree in 1992. During the time Rich and Deanna attended NDSU, they operated the "Golden Nugget" during WeFest and continued that annual event for 13 years. Along with the "Golden Nugget", Rich operated Picture Perfect Landscaping, later joining his son in Northwest Landscaping. Rich continued his passion for construction until his retirement in 2011, building residential homes throughout the area, most notably the Detroit Lakes Hospice building. His latest project was the construction of his garage this past summer. He was able to work side by side with his sons, finishing a project he was extremely proud of. In his spare time, Rich enjoyed tending to his garden, sharing his love for cooking with his wife Deanna, his love of music and knowledge of music trivia, collecting knives, hunting Tamarac Refuge, processing wild game, fishing, and sharing his wealth of knowledge on firearms. Rich wrote several technical articles regarding guns and ammunition. The most important aspect of Rich's life was his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed following their activities and loved having them over for a visit. Rich was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Detroit Lakes. Rich will be remembered and missed by his wife Deanna, sons: David Noel of Frazee, James Noel of Detroit Lakes and daughters: Julie Berns of Glyndon and Vickie (Jim) Lee of Detroit Lakes along with 13 grandchildren: Tammy, Hunter, Xerina, Taija, Alyssa, Desire, Wesley, Megan, Tosha, Austin, Payton, Henry and Reagan. He is also survived by his close aunt: Donna Long of Detroit Lakes, three brothers: Rodrick (Ingrid) Sherman of Iowa, Mike Sherman of Fargo, Todd Sherman of Mahnomen, one sister; JeriLynne (David) Jaeger of Mahnomen along with many cousins, aunts, uncles and nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and one brother: Shannon.
