Robert P. Santwire, 73, resident of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Essentia Health in Fargo due to complications from open heart surgery. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, September 8 at 11AM in St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 7 at David Donehower Funeral Home from 5PM – 7PM with a 7PM Prayer Service. Visitation will also continue one hour prior to services on Monday. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
Robert Peter Santwire was born January 13, 1941 in Mahnomen, MN to Alfred and Emma (Germaine) Santwire. Bob attended Waubun High School graduating in 1959. After high school he attended Moorhead State. On September 3, 1960 Bob was united in marriage to Marlys Blattenbauer in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Beaulieu, MN. Throughout the years they lived in Moorhead, Ada, and Minneapolis before moving back to Detroit Lakes in 1968. Bob started working with State Farm Insurance in 1966 and retired with the company in 1998. Bob was an avid fisherman and for 52 years enjoyed the annual fishing opener with the "gang". He enjoyed playing his guitar, tinkering with projects and entertaining, especially when it allowed him to be the "Chef" in his cook shack. As important as fishing was to Bob, he was even more proud of his family, especially his grandchildren. His love for family was evident in the 54 years of marriage he shared with Marlys. Always charismatic and witty, Bob had that special gift in making everyone feel comfortable in his presence. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a smile that would light up a room. Bob will be remembered and missed by his wife of 54 years, Marlys of Detroit Lakes, one son: Scott (Colleen) Santwire of Detroit Lakes and two daughters: Sonia (Charles) O'Brien of Inver Grove Heights and Susie (Kevin) Bassett of Farmington, along with seven grandchildren, one sister: Cora (Edwin) Neisen of Cold Spring, and one brother: Al (Connie) Santwire of Fargo. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Leonard and Thomas and one sister: Ivadelle Schmoll.
