Roderick D. Marteness, 96, Lake Park, MN, died Tuesday, June 11 at Oak Crossing. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, June 15 at Strandvik Lutheran Church in rural Lake Park, Rev. Randy Whitehead, officiating. Interment services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, June 22 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Valley City, ND. Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Roderick D. Marteness, known as Rod, was born May 15, 1917 in Cavalier, North Dakota to George W. and Mathilda (Randall) Marteness. He was raised and educated in the Cavalier area and served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Idaho. Rod was united in marriage to Evelyn Sundstron in Valley City, ND. He then worked as a Section Forman Northern Pacific (which later became the Burlington Northern) Rail Road living in Valley City, Killdeer, Hensler and Woodworth, ND prior to moving to W. Fargo in 1957. He retired in 1977 and moved to their home near Rosman Lake in rural Lake Park, MN. Evelyn died in 1993. Rod enjoyed gardening, woodworking, winemaking, baking, especially bread, and was an avid reader and life-long learner. Survivors include two daughters: Rene' Fuss of Lake Park, Candy (Dick) Skauge of Lake Park, a son: Bruce (Janice) Marteness of Cottage Grove, MN, seven grandchildren, 10 great- grandchildren, two great- great grandchildren, two sisters: Dorothy Witschonke of Chicago, IL and Charlotte (Bill) Smiley of Bastrop, TX. In addition to his wife, Evelyn, he was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
