Roger A. Keepers, 88, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Fargo, ND.
Funeral Services for Roger will be held on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 1:00 PM in Community Alliance Church in Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held on Monday one hour prior to services. Interment will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
Roger Arlin Keepers was born November 4, 1921 in Cottonwood, MN to Raymond and Amelia ( maiden name ) Keepers. He was raised and educated near Cottonwood. He attended country school near Cottonwood and later graduating from Cottonwood High School. In 1942, he was united in marriage to Neva Brown. Roger enlisted into the United States Army. He proudly served his country during WWII and the Korean War. He attained the rank of 1
st
Lieutenant. Following his honorable discharge, Roger attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and earned a degree in Forestry. He worked at a few small town lumber yards before accepting a position as manager for Paxton Lumber Company in Des Moines, Iowa. He retired in 1984. In 1986, Roger was united in marriage to Marleen Knapp in Walker, MN. Together they traveled in their RV.,living in Texas during the winter months and Detroit Lakes during the summer. While in Texas, they lived in Rio Grande Valley where Roger managed the mobile home park and with Marleen were the social directors. They were in charge of arranging all the events at the park. Throughout his life, Roger had a passion for wood working, building crafts and small furniture. He also enjoyed fishing and watching his sports, especially the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys. Roger had a giving nature which was evident in his tutoring of grade school students while in Texas, to his volunteer work with Hospice in Detroit Lakes. Roger’s relationship with his savior Jesus Christ was evident with the way he lived his life.
Roger will be remembered and missed by his wife, Marleen “Marly” of Detroit Lakes, MN, his children; Jackie (Randy) Williams of Des Moines, IA, Roger “Buzz” Keepers Jr. of Chadron, NE, Craig (Jennie) Keepers of Eden Prairie, MN, step children: Edward Holst of Ft. Dodge, IA, Rhonda (Gerry) Thiele of Benton Harbor, MI, Julia (David) Millard of Ft. Worth, TX and John (Karen) Holst of Des Moines, IA 36 grandchildren along with one brother, Don (Liz) Keepers of Mankato, MN and Mesa, AZ.
Roger is preceded in death by his parents.
