Rose Viola Bankord was born August 13, 1909 in Bovey, MN to John and Anne Lisa (Ohlgren) Bankord. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. During her younger years she attended rural school in Ottertail County. She then attended two years in Sebeka, MN and finished her junior and senior years of high school in Virginia, MN. After graduating high school she went to St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes and completed her training in nursing, graduating from St. Mary’s program as a registered nurse.
Her first job as an RN was at St. Mary’s Hospital where she spoke fluent Finnish and was often used as an interpreter. She later went on to work for the Veteran’s Hospital in Milwaukee, WI. While working in Milwaukee, she found love and was united in marriage to John “Jack” Hayes. She worked as a nurse in Amarillo, TX, Dumas, TX, Houston, TX and Park Rapids, MN retiring in 1985. Rose and John moved to Detroit Lakes, MN in the spring of 1990. John passed away in the fall of 1990. Rose kept herself busy, quilting with her friends at First Lutheran, going on coffee outings with her girlfriends and keeping in close touch with her family. Rose enjoyed cooking, reading, and reminiscing about past memories of time growing up with family and friends. Rose also loved to shop, she gave meaning to the phrase “shop till you drop” as she could shop for hours on end. Rose had a giving personality, whether it was for the sick or hungry she carried her nursing experience throughout life. Even when she was a resident in Frazee Rose shared her caring nature with her roommates over the years.
Rose will be remembered and dearly missed by her grandson; John (Marcia) Hayes of Houston, TX, granddaughter Kari Farrin of Denver, CO, great granddaughter Eduarda Hayes of Honolulu, Hawaii, niece Hazel Bimberg of Frazee, MN along with several other nieces, nephews and friends.
