Ruth J. Odland, 87, Detroit Lakes, MN, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Memorial services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, August 29 at the United Methodist Church in Detroit Lakes, Reverend Brenda North, officiating. Interment will be in the United Methodist Memorial Garden. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Ruth Jost Odland was born October 3, 1921 in Sioux Falls, SD to Peter and Maye (Holzer) Jost She was a graduate and Valedictorian of Sioux Falls Washington High School, and attended Sioux Falls College. Ruth graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University Of South Dakota and a Masters of Arts from the University Of Minnesota, Magna Cum Laude.
Ruth taught business and typing in Worthing, SD and Beaver Creek, MN before relocating to California to join Mark. Ruth was united in marriage to Mark E, Odland on May 21, 1944 in Westwood Hills, CA. They enjoyed 65 years of married life together.
Ruth was active in many civic and local organizations including Eastern Star, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Detroit Lakes Library Club, the League Of Women Voters, the Republican Party, North Star Lily Society, and the Women’s Group of the United Methodist Church. She was an avid reader and loved to research and write on her studies.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Mark Odland of Detroit Lakes; son, David (Darlene) Odland of Henderson, NV; three daughters: Mary (Rick) Duvall of Plymouth, MN, Martha (Jeffrey) Anderson of Edina, MN, Nancy (Whitney) Peyton of Edina, MN; six granddaughters: Jana (Jason) Cole of Carlsbad, CA, Ellen (Carlin) Wiegner of Palo Alto, CA, Jillian Thorpe of Fairbanks, AK, Alex Peyton of Edina, MN, Jane D. Anderson of Edina, MN; Lizzie Peyton of Jackson WY; one great-grandson, Ethan Patrick Cole of Carlsbad, CA; sister-in-law, Arlys Jost of Lebanon, OH and her children: Stephen (Lorraine) Jost of Amhurst, MA, Linda (Ronald) Miller of Cincinnati, OH and Mark (Linda Marie) Jost of Boise, ID. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, and a brother, Robert, formerly of Muncie, IN.
Memorials are preferred to the United Methodist Church.
