Ruth Thompson

Ruth E. Thompson, 76, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Tuesday, March 6 at her home surrounded by her children and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Saturday, March 10 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Msgr. Timothy McGee, officiating. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery. Friends may call 5:00 – 7:00 PM Friday with a Catholic Daughters Rosary at 6:30 PM and Parish Vigil at 7:00 PM at David-Donehower Funeral Home. The visitation will continue at the church 1 hour prior to the mass on Saturday. Ruth Elaine Thompson was born March 6, 1936 in Mitchell, SD to Clifford and Margaret (Wingut) Williams. As a young girl, she lived in Minot, ND and Bismarck, ND prior to moving to Detroit Lakes in 1950 when her parents purchased the Point Resort on Big Detroit Lake. Ruth was united in marriage to Arville Thompson May 29, 1954 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. She graduated from Moorhead State College in 1970 and taught in Alexandria, MN for 1 semester and at Frazee Public Schools for 27 years, retiring in 1998. She also operated a licensed foster care home 1982 – 2003. Ruth was a member of Holy Rosary Church and of Catholic Daughters. She enjoyed her flower gardens, especially her Roses, growing fruits and vegetables, reading and doing crossword puzzles. Survivors include eight children: Theresa Quam, Ruth Thompson, Cliff (Gail) Thompson, Mary (Harlan) Hendrickson and Linda Rossback all of Detroit Lakes, Kathleen (Mike) Anderson of Midland, MI, Suzanne Thompson of Lake Elsinore, CA and Jennifer (Paul) Soyring of Callaway, MN; 12 grandchildren; five great- grandchildren, three sisters: Marlene Sjaastad of Detroit Lakes, Virginia Ingram of Billings, MT and Mary Riedenger of Bellingham, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister: Cathy Johnson and grandchildren: Eric Thompson, Jessie and Jamie Stone. David-Donehower Funeral Home is serving the family. .Memorials are preferred to Holy Rosary Church or Hospice of the Red River Valley.
