Sherman Gerald Weigel was born March 4th, 1922 in South Sioux City, Nebraska to Nathan (Pat) and Sadie (Steklenburg) Weigel. He graduated from high school in Salix, Iowa. He and his family moved to Denver, Colorado after graduation. Sherman entered into the United States Army Air Corp in 1942. He became a radio operator, radar observer & Aerial gunner on a B24 bomber. Sherman was a cadet in navigation training at the end of WW II. In 1947 he moved to a farm just northwest of Callaway to farm with his dad and attended Agricultural School in Crookston. On Oct 31, 1949 he married Virginia L. Stach. He and his wife later moved to Shakopee, MN where he worked construction as a pile driver. In 1960 he moved to his current residence near Callaway. He started working for the State Highway dept. in Detroit Lakes where he retired from in 1985 as a Supervisor in the sign shop. Sherman loved to travel, hunt, snowmobile, wood work, play board games, dice games and dance. Throughout the years, he and his wife traveled to many areas of the U.S. including Alaska, They also attended the Scandinavian Hostfest festival in Minot, ND for over 20 years. They were members of the "Country Twirlers" square dancing club in Lake Park, MN. If they weren't traveling or dancing you could find him in his workshop, crafting a variety of items from candy machines to furniture. Sherman was a lifetime member of the American Legion club, and a member of the Fraternal order of Eagles. Sherman took pride in his yard and gardens. His several acre yard was always immaculately mowed as well as his adjoining road ditches. He loved to decorate his yard at Christmas with lots and lots of lights in the trees.
He had flower gardens near the road that he took a lot of pride in making sure they were always colorful and impressive. A devoted husband and father, Sherman was also a loving grandfather and great-grandfather who adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sherman will be deeply missed by his eight children: Sherman D. (Deborah) of Nora Springs , IA, Terry (Kathleen) of Horace, ND, Norman (Jill) of Bismarck, ND, James (Cindy)of Mandan, ND, Kathy LaPash , (fiancée' Glenn Kalsnes) of West Fargo, ND, Mark (Colleen) of Centerville, MN, Lee (Jamie)of Ogema, MN and Debra (Jerry) of Audubon, MN. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, along with brother Virgil, Elk Point, SD, Sisters Arlene Skogen, Scotland, SD and Julia Larson, Baudette, MN. Sherman was preceded in death by his wife Virginia of 63 years (May 8, 2013), his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
