Shirley DeVries

Shirley I. DeVries, 77, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Sunday, June 5, 2016 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. A Celebration of Shirley's life will be at 11:00 AM Friday, June 24 at David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, Chaplain Tim Cook, officiating. Interment will be at 4:30 PM that afternoon at Lakeside Cemetery, Herman, MN. Visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00 AM Friday, June 24 at the funeral home. Shirley I. DeVries was born June 13, 1938 in rural Herman, MN to Edward and Eleanor (Fabian) DeVries. She was raised and educated in Herman and is a 1956 graduate of Herman-Norcross High School. She attended Moorhead State University 1956 – 1960 earning a Bachelor of Science Degree. She earned a Master's Degree from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN in 1985. Shirley worked for Lakeland Mental Health 1986 – 1988; for Lutheran Social Services 1988 – 1998 and for the Mahube Head Start Program 1998 until her retirement in 2000. Shirley was an avid reader especially of historical murder mysteries, she loved her cats, going for drives, especially those ending in lunch, and was a member of V.I.S.T.A. (Volunteer in Service to America.) Survivors include a brother, Edward (Terry) DeVries of Perham, MN, a sister, Marlys (Donald) Overson of Mora, MN, seven nieces and nephews: Glen (Pam) Overson, Susan (Tony) Peloquin, Dale (Donna) Overson, Joel (Tracy Johnson) Overson, Jill DeVries, Kara (Joe)Schumann, Bryant (Rebekka) DeVries and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
