Shirley Ann Peck (McDougall, Hunnel) was born on July 28, 1928 in Pelican Rapids, MN to Charles E. Peck Sr. and Borghild (Berg) Peck. Her family farmed in Scambler Township, Lake Park, MN and later settled in Audubon, MN. Shirley graduated from Audubon High School in 1947. After graduation she moved to Detroit Lakes where she resided until her passing.
Shirley's career spanned over 70 years. She worked as a waitress, daycare provider, and car detailer. She was known for her "no nonsense" demeanor, quick wit, curiosity, fully supplied snack counter, and her joy of caring for others. Being welcome at the Hunnels was a given. She enjoyed baking, keeping a tidy house, sewing, and most of all spending time with her family, friends, and grandkids. Her famous phrase "be kind and gentle" defines the essence of her being and her matriarchal role that kept her family intact.
She married Duane McDougall in 1949 and they had one son, Greg. Later she married Les McDougall and they had one daughter, Natalie. She was married to Jim Hunnel on July 24, 1965 and they had two sons, Tim and Paul.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Jim; three sons, Greg McDougall (Laurie Gjerde) of Detroit Lakes, MN; Tim Hunnel (Angie) of Detroit Lakes, MN; Paul Hunnel (Life Partner, Kirk Van Dorn) of Detroit Lakes, MN; daughter Natalie McArthur (Bugger) of Ogema, MN; step daughters ; Sherry Leach (David) of Tucson, AZ; Kathy Huntsman (Art) of Long Beach, CA; Karen Horvejkul (Tommy) of Lake Forest, CA; step son Daniel Hunnel of Downey, Ca; brother Clayton Peck (Norraine) of Fargo, ND; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceeded in death by her mother Borghild (1956) ; father Charles (1977) sister Connie 2009 and brother Charles Jr. (2014).
