Shirley Ann Lee, 84, Detroit Lakes, MN, died peacefully Wednesday, March 23 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Funeral Services for Shirley will be held Saturday, April 2 at 11AM in the Congregational Church-United Church of Christ, Detroit Lakes. Officiating will be Reverend Mark Kuether. Visitation will be held Friday, April 1 at David Donehower Funeral Home from 5pm-7pm and continue at the church one hour prior to services. Interment will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes. Shirley Ann Moffitt was born October 11, 1931 in Kindred, ND to C. Bruce and Martha (Peak) Moffitt. At the age of 5, Shirley and her family moved to Detroit Lakes. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School with the class of 1949. She furthered her education, attending Hamline University, graduating with a degree in nursing. For a short time she worked as a nurse in the Twin Cities area. During her 50-some years as a registered nurse, she worked many years at St. Mary's Hospital (now Essentia) and clinic in Detroit Lakes. She also worked in Pelican Rapids, and several winters in Everett, WA. On April 24, 1960, Shirley was united in marriage to Duane "Duke" Lee.
Shirley was active in the Detroit Lakes community. She volunteered her time and supported the Humane Society of the Lakes, Lakes Crisis and Resource Center, Becker County Food Pantry, Congregational Church, Hospice of the Red River Valley, Homemakers Group, American Legion and VFW. Her hobbies included cooking, crafting, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and traveling. She enjoyed wintering with Duke in Yuma, AZ. She had a special love for flying, especially in small engine planes. She loved going to rummage sales, thrift stores and dollar stores to discover interesting things, books, costume jewelry and pretty clothes. She had a special place in her heart for all animals and birds, providing food and shelter for any that came near. Her warm smile, sense of humor, loving and caring personality and intelligent nature will be missed by all. Shirley is survived by three nephews and one niece: David Bartholomew of Dallas, TX, Duane Bartholomew of Honolulu, HI, Thomas Bartholomew of Belle Plaine, MN and Maureen Bartholomew Nelson of Burnsville, MN. She is preceded in death by her husband Duke (2004), sisters: Inez Bartholomew, Vivian Moffitt, and Genevieve Moffitt along with one nephew: Charles Bartholomew. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the Congregational Church, Humane Society or Lakes Crisis and Resource Center.
