Steven Kinnunen

November 27, 1952 — February 13, 2011

Steven P. Kinnunen, 58, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Sunday, February 13 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Saturday, February 19 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, Msgr. Timothy McGee, officiating. Interment will be in St. Henry's Cemetery, Perham, MN. Friends may call 5:00 – 7:00 PM with a rosary at 6:30PM and prayer service at 7:00 PM Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. The visitation will continue 1 hour prior to the mass at the church on Saturday. Steven Paul Kinnunen was born November 27, 1952 in Wadena, MN to Ernie and Pauline (Goodyear) Kinnunen. He moved with his family to Detroit Lakes as a young boy. Steve is a 1971 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School where he was active in Cross Country, finishing third in the district meet. He also worked with his Dad at Lambert Lumber Company in Detroit Lakes. The family started Northern Mart Furniture which, following the death of his father, Steve and his mother operated. Steve was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Cindy Ditterick, July 21, 1972 in Detroit Lakes. They later purchased Northern Mart and operated it for 10 years. Steve joined Pevey Lumber, which became Homestead Lumber, in Frazee where he worked for 28 years. He also drove bus for Anderson Bus Company in Frazee for 21 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, family vacations, downhill skiing, water skiing, kiayking, woodworking and building furniture. He was a wonderful, loving husband and father. He had the most gentle, loving heart. He was Cindy's prince from the start. He will be greatly missed and loved forever. Survivors include his wife: Cindy of Detroit Lakes; a daughter: Angela (Christopher) Solmon of Detroit Lakes, a son: Heath Kinnunen of Jacksonville, FL, his mother: Pauline Aleshire of Detroit Lakes; five sisters: Sharon Lasley-Brown of Minneapolis, Sandy Weets of Minneapolis, Susan Whitten of Woodbury, MN, Shelley Chapin of Minneapolis and Kathy Kinnunen of Minneapolis.
