Susan Harker

Susan Edwards Harker, 85, of Frazee, MN, died peacefully at her home on February 8, 2015. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 14 at 1PM in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held Friday, February 13 at David Donehower Funeral Home from 5PM until 7PM. Susan was born April 10, 1929 to D.C. and Lillian Edwards in Minneapolis. She graduated from Shattuck-St. Mary's High School in Faribault, MN in 1947. She attended Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, graduating with a degree in English. At Lawrence, Susan met Frederick Harker. They married on June 29, 1951, in Minneapolis, and celebrated 58 years of marriage. After living in Missouri while Fred completed military training, the couple moved to Minneapolis and Fred began his long career with the Chase Bag Company. They moved to Deerfield, IL, in 1958. In 1973, the family moved to their home on Wymer Lake in Frazee. Susan was devoted to her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her children and their families, as well as extended family and friends. She provided a warm and welcoming home to many with her graceful spirit. Her many interests included art, reading, gardening, cooking, travel and the peaceful surroundings at the lake. Susan and Fred opened their hearts and home to many people over the years. They had a special love for children, those living across the lake or around the globe. They hosted AFS students from Brazil, Turkey and South Africa. They helped establish a thriving Young Life Chapter in the Detroit Lakes area. Susan was an extraordinary woman whose strong faith was reflected through her kindness, grace and genuine concern for others. Her warm smile and calming presence will be missed deeply by her family and friends, even as we rejoice that she is now in the presence of Christ and has been reunited with loved ones. Susan is survived by her daughters: Kerry Hainze, Shorewood, WI, Sara (Dave) of Mahtomedi, MN, Polly (Paul) of Fargo, ND and Lucy (Dave) of West Fargo, ND. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and special friend of the family, Mary Olson.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Fred, daughter, Kate, her parents and three sisters. A special thank you to the compassionate and caring staff of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
