Ted was born on January 10, 1945 to Hester (Aldrich) and Harry Smith at St. James Hospital in Perham, MN. He married Sandra Betterman on June 25, 1966. They lived in Perham for a short time after they were married then moved to Washington State where they lived from 1967-1976. Three of their children, Don, Cheryl and Eric were born in Washington. They then moved back to Minnesota where their youngest son Greg was born. Ted and Sandy stayed in Minnesota for several years then moved to Nebraska for six years and made the final move back to the Detroit Lakes area in 1987 and have been at their home on Pearl Lake since 1996. For many years throughout his life, Ted worked in construction. Once moving to Detroit Lakes he was employed by Friesen's and then CJJ, Inc., until he was no longer able to work.
Ted's true passion in life was bass fishing. He had been a member of many bass fishing clubs and had made many great friends through this hobby. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends and spending time with his grandchildren. Ted will be remembered for his outgoing nature, fantastic sense of humor and his love of the outdoors.
Ted will be remembered and missed by his wife, Sandy; four children, Don (Tanya) Smith, Cheryl (Tim) Wolfe, Eric (Jesi) Smith, Greg (Jennifer) Smith all of Detroit Lakes, MN; 13 grandchildren, Kriztina Smith, Brandon Brown, Christopher Smith, Chriztopher Smith, Megan Brown, Jakob Bertek, Kaylee Smith, Hailey Smith, Logan Smith, Jessica Smith, Ashlyn Smith, Alex Smith and Emma Smith; sisters, Pat North of Ely, MN and Dorothy (Duane) Thunstrom of Rochert, MN; numerous other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Kevin; one brother, Milo.
