Timothy L. Sweeney, 61, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Wednesday, May 6 at St. Mary’s Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes. Mass Of Christian Burial will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 12 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Fr. Jerry Rogers, officiating. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery. Friends may call 4:00 – 7:00 PM Monday, May 11 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the mass at the church on Tuesday.
Timothy L. Sweeney was born June 14, 1947 in Fargo, ND to Raymond F. and Elsie (Albright) Sweeney. The family moved to the northwest side of Floyd Lake in rural Detroit Lakes in 1953. Tim attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and was a 1966 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School. In the summer of 1966, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served on the USS Henry Clay (SSBN625), attaining the rank of TM2(SU). While on the Henry Clay (a submarine), he traveled to many parts of the world, much of the time below the surface of the sea. He passed the gateway to the top of the world over the Arctic Circle in 1968 and received his Dolphins, the symbol of this accomplishment. After an especially difficult tour under the sea, he was diagnosed with diabetes and received an honorable medical discharge on July 6, 1970. While in the Navy, Tim was united in marriage with Christine Moskos October 5, 1969 in Charleston, SC. Following his discharge, he worked as a repairman for Sears in Charleston, until moving back to Detroit Lakes in 1977. He worked as a carpenter and a stone mason until becoming permanently disabled in 1988. Tim was united in marriage with Lanette Nelson June 16, 1979 in Litchfield, MN.
Tim greatly enjoyed spending time with his children, family and friends. He lived to fish and hunt. He loved telling stories of being in the Navy, living in South Carolina, his fishing and hunting exploits, and where the next fishing adventure was to be with his long time friend, Russ.
Tim is survived by three sons and a daughter, Timothy II and his wife Rhonda of Lake Park, MN, Nichole Grubbs of North Columbia, SC, Joshua and his wife Jamie of Detroit Lakes and Eric of Detroit Lakes; 11 grandchildren; his companion and care giver, Lanny Sweeney of Detroit Lakes; four brothers and two sisters, Gerald and his wife Karen of Hartwell, GA, Stephen and his wife Peggy of Savannah, GA, Ray of Detroit Lakes, Therese Sweeney of Detroit Lakes, Pat and his wife Sue of Detroit Lakes, Joan and her husband Marty Bizjack of Battleground, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David.
