Vera Grones, 95, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at her home surrounded by her family and in care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, November 4 at 1:00 PM in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery, Detroit Lakes. Vera Arboe was born June 9, 1916 in Copenhagen, Denmark to Osborne and Emma (Jensen) Arboe. As a toddler she moved to the United States to be with her family. For three years she lived in Duluth, MN before moving with her family to Minneapolis. Vera was raised and educated in Minneapolis graduating from Edison High School in 1934. As a young lady, Vera met Harland Grones while working at the Dry Goods Store while Harland was working a few doors down at the local Drug Store. They were united in marriage October 7, 1939 and for 72 years never left each others side. In 1942 they welcomed a baby boy, Jim. Vera was a stay-at-home mom until 1958. Later that year she went to work at the coffee shop as a cashier at the University of Minnesota Hospital. Vera retired in 1976. On October 1, 1980, Vera and Harland relocated to Detroit Lakes to be closer to their son. They enjoyed retirement years traveling together in their motor home across the United States and into the Canadian Provinces, putting on over 450, 000 miles. One of her favorite destinations was the Black Hills in South Dakota each June. Vera loved to read, solve crossword puzzles and bird watching. Every month for 52 years, Vera and Harland would get together with family to play cards, with 500 being the game of choice. Vera was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. She will be remembered and deeply missed by her husband of 72 years, Harland of Detroit Lakes, one son: Jim and his wife Joyce of Detroit Lakes, along with three grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother Kenneth and one sister: Lillian Hanson.
