Vernon Rasmussen

Vernon M. Rasmussen, 79, Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of Ulen, MN, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, March 20 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen, Pastors Rolf Aanestad and Loren Fevig, officiating. Interment will be in the Bethlehem Lutheran North Cemetery, Ulen, with military rites provided by the Ulen American Legion Post #412 and VFW Post #515.


Friends may call 4:00 – 800 PM Thursday, March 19 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes and at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.


Vernon Monroe Rasmussen was born May 13, 1929 in Hunter, North Dakota to Carl R. and Alice (Prestegord) Rasmussen. He moved with his family to Ulen, MN in 1936 and attended District 68 country school. He later attended agriculture school in Crookston, MN. Vern served with the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he returned to Ulen where he farmed the family farm until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1999. Vern was united in marriage with Virginia Doran November 14, 1970 in Ulen. They later divorced. He married Lois Berg, July 9, 1983 in Detroit Lakes. He played guitar and was a musician in a number of area bands. He entered Emmanuel Nursing Home, October 10, 2008.


Vern enjoyed music, collecting John Deere items, and farming.


Survivors include his wife, Lois of Detroit Lakes; step-children, Tim (Lorie) Doran of Ulen, Gordon Berg and John Berg, both of Detroit Lakes, Cheryl (Gary) Miller of Stillwater, MN, Gerald (Sue) Doran of West Fargo, ND, Lonna Doran of Cottage Grove, MN; three step-grandchildren, Heather Barnak, Tyler Berg and Karissa Berg; two step-great grandchildren, Gracie Jackson and Greta Frish; two sisters, Donna (Richard) Sip of Ada, MN and Ruthie (Gene) Baker of Alexandria, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and a step-son, Allen Berg and a brother-in-law, Richard Rude.
