Vienna Ida Vergin Baker, age 94, passed away at Ecumen-Emmanuel Nursing Home on Monday, March 24, 2015. Vi's funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 28 at Richwood Lutheran Church, 24284 250th St. Detroit lakes, Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm with a prayer service at 7:00pm on Friday, March 27 at David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes and will continue one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
Vienna was born September 1, 1920 to William and Minnie (Vergin) Zehms in Hamden Township, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. She was baptized October 3, 1920 at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ogema, Minnesota and confirmed September 24, 1933 at Atlanta Lutheran Church in Ulen, Minnesota. She graduated from Lake Park High School in 1939. She was united in marriage to Merritt Baker on November 22, 1939. They farmed around the Callaway and Lake Park area until 1957. She then worked for George and Ruby Scherzer, helping with their family and also worked at the Palmer Hotel in Lake Park. She continued working for the next two and a half years at Sunnyside Nursing Home as a nurse's aide. In 1957 they purchased a small café in Callaway, known as Baker's Café. Merritt passed away on August 4, 1970 and she continued to operate the café for the next 33 years until her retirement in September 1990. She continued to live in the house that she and Merritt built, until 1999, when she moved to the Silver Birch Apartments in Detroit Lakes. On September 13, 2008 she entered Emmanuel (Ecumen) Nursing Home.
She is survived by a son, Lowell (Cleo) of Callaway; a daughter, Carol (Damian) Zurn of Detroit Lakes; sisters, Mabel Thorsen of Lake Park, Pearl Anderson of Grantsburg, WI, and Joyce (Virgil) Seegebarth of Hinckley; a brother, Vernon (Nettie) Zehms of Corinth, TX; a sister-in-law, Odelia Tietz of Detroit Lakes; grandchildren, Shannon (Brian)Donner, Troy (Nancy) Baker, Shelly Bunnell, Darin (Leanna) Zurn, and Kristi (Mark)Stalberger; and 13 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Merritt; parents, William and Minnie; a baby brother; sister, Evelyn Bergstrom; brothers, Duane Tietz, Raymond Tietz, and David Zehms; brother-in-law's, Martin Thorsen, Selmer Anderson, and Melvin Bergstrom.
