Virgil Mastin

Virgil Robert Mastin, born on April 16, 1940, in Perham, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2024, at Essentia Health St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, surrounded by family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather whose life was marked by a commitment to family and the many ways he enriched their lives.

Throughout his career, Virgil demonstrated remarkable versatility. He began as a mink farmer and later worked in road construction. In his later years, he embraced carpentry, showcasing his skills by building numerous homes for others, leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship that will be cherished. His most notable achievement, however, was the invaluable life lessons he imparted to his family, emphasizing the importance of staying together and supporting one another.

Family was at the core of Virgil's existence. He took immense pride in teaching his children and grandchildren the art of woodworking, ensuring that his knowledge would be carried on through generations. Beyond the realm of carpentry, he enjoyed activities that fostered bonding and created memories, such as riding horses, hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards, and engaging in spirited games of horseshoes.

Virgil was not only a father but also a coach and mentor. His proudest accomplishments include teaching his kids how to show their livestock in 4H and coaching the 4H softball team to a championship where he inspired many young athletes. He was always ready with guidance and wisdom to share with loved ones. He was also a dedicated member of Faith Free Lutheran church and considered Pastor Larson a dear friend.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Pat Mastin; his children, Scott Mastin (Linda), Becki Mastin (Brian), Jodi Theroux (Nick), and Anthony Mastin (Misty); and his cherished grandchildren, Bryce (Taunya), Jaime, Blake (Mercedes), Joshua (Hannah), Mckenzie, and Gavin. In addition, Virgil was a proud great-grandfather to Lily, Brooke, Ava, Bella, Verona, Havana, Ella, and a new great granddaughter and great-great granddaughter arriving soon. He will be greatly missed by his sister Joyce Peterson (Bruce) and sister-in-law Marilyn Leitheiser (Tom). He will also be remembered fondly by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Elsie Mastin; his siblings Lora Moss (Lawrence), Vernon Mastin (Babe), Jacob Mastin, Jerald Mastin (Vera), Ivan Mastin (Jen), Opal Morrison (Eugene), Edwin Mastin (Judy), and Gordon Mastin (Carol); his in laws, John and Helen Leitheiser, Betty Becotte (Don), James Leitheiser (Phyllis), and Tom Leitheiser.

Virgil Robert Mastin will be remembered not just for his various achievements but for the love of family he instilled in all those who knew him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and the many lives he touched.
