Virginia M. Muhlenkort, 82, Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of Waubun, MN, died Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Mass Of Christian Burial will be 2:00 PM Thursday, June 4 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, Fr. Jerry Rogers, officiating. Interment services will be 4:15 PM Thursday at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery, Waubun. Friends may call 4:00 – 7:00 PM Wednesday, June 3 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. There will be a rosary at 6:30 PM followed by a prayer service at 7:00 PM Wednesday at the church.
Virginia Mae Muhlenkort was born September 24, 1926 in Mitchell, SD to Harry and Kathryn Giesen) Hawn. She moved with her family to Sioux Falls, SD where she graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in 1945.
Virginia was united in marriage with Oliver Muhlenkort, November 11, 1952 in Sioux Falls, SD. They moved to Waubun, MN where she spent her life as a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Oliver died in 1994 and Virginia moved to Detroit Lakes.
Virginia enjoyed writing letters and knitting. She was a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary Post #436. She was also a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church while in Waubun and Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes.
Surviving Virginia are seven children, Donald of Waubun, MN, Mary Ann (Gene) Broberg of Oklahoma City, OK, Mark of Chaska, MN, June (Rollie) Olson of Sartell, MN, Elizabeth (Brian) Zurn of Detroit Lakes, John (Carrie) of Detroit Lakes, Karen (Jessie) McCollum of Ulen, MN; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, two brothers, Harry of LaMesa, CA, Don (Heidi) of El Cajon, CA; three sisters, Carole Walton of Sioux Falls, SD, Mary Ellen (Charles) Feyder of Side Lake, MN and Ruth (Richard) Kinney of Sioux Falls, SD. In addition to her husband, Oliver, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Taplett and Judy Pemberton.
