Walter Halvorson

Walter Leroy Halvorson, age 85, of Detroit Lakes passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Eventide Lutheran Nursing Home in Moorhead, MN under the care of the Hospice of the Red River Valley. A memorial service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 4 at David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes with a visitation one hour prior, Pastor Dave Peterson officiating. Walter was born on September 9, 1929 to John and Mabel (Speten) Halvorson in Ponsford, MN. He attended Ponsford Country School. In 1951 he joined the U.S. Army where he served overseas during the Korean War. On September 27, 1954 he was united in marriage to Helen Mayberry at Charles and Elizabeth Mayberry's rural Ponsford home and from that union was born: Jacki, Deborah, Vicki, Gwendolyn, Brenda, and John. From 1960 until 1970 he worked for Krabbenhoft Farms in Sabin, MN. He then went to work as a carpenter for Lewis Construction. Walter retired in 1988 from Meineke-Johnson and he and his wife settled into their home on Ice Cracking Lake.
Walter enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing horseshoes, carpentry, gardening with his wife, spending time with his family and grandchildren, their pets Sable and Joshua, life in general, and an occasional Old Mil'. Walter was a former member of the Sabin Volunteer Fire Department. He was also never without a story. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Helen; parents, John and Mabel; a daughter, Deborah; sisters, Millie Booke, May Schott, Goldie Thunstrom, Myra Burlingame, and Lavonne Nugent; brothers, Phillip and Jack; grandchildren, Jarrod and LaNae. He is survived by his children: Jacki (Jody) Odengaard of Fargo, ND; Vicki (Kim) Lein of Vergas, MN; Gwendolyn (Curt) Goodman of Barnesville, MN; Brenda (Bryan) Fredrickson of Vergas, MN; John (Faye) Halvorson of Detroit Lakes; sisters, Irene (Jim) Mack of Sebeka and Shirley Sandberg of Detroit Lakes; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
