William F. “Bill” Scheler, 90, Callaway, MN, died Friday, February 6, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Mass Of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Saturday, February 14 at Assumption Catholic Church in Callaway, Father Xavier Ilango, officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Callaway. Friends may call 4:00 – 7:00 PM Friday, February 13 with a rosary at 6:30 PM at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the mass at the church on Saturday.
William Francis Scheler was born June 18, 1918 at Jamestown, ND to Anton and Mary (Falk) Scheler. He was a 1937 graduate of Jamestown High School. During his school years, he also delivered newspapers for the Jamestown Sun, set pins at Majestic Bowling Alley and worked for a golf course. After graduation, he was a checker at Economy Grocery in Jamestown prior to moving to Minnesota. In 1939, he purchased a small farm in the Strawberry Lake area of rural Ogema, MN. While there, he also did some carpenter work and worked for several summers for the Northern Pacific Railroad.
Bill was united in marriage to Arzetta Coles, November 27, 1939 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in White Earth, MN. In 1950, he began working for American Crystal Sugar Co. during the fall and winter months. He retired in 1983. They moved into Callaway in 1987. Both Bill and Arzetta were active volunteers at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center for many years. Arzetta died in 2005
Bill enjoyed his grandchildren, farming, gardening, canning, golfing, having coffee and lunch with his neighbors, keeping track of and documenting the weather each day and taking train and bus tours touching each of the 48 contiguous states.
Bill is survived by his children, Lucretia (Ralph) Adair of Charleston, SC, Dennis (Rogene) Scheler of Callaway, Nancy (Steven) Nelson of Oak Grove, MN, Edwin (Linda) Scheler of Waubun, MN; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; sisters, Isabelle Davis of Los Angeles, CA, Mary Scheler of Los Angeles, CA; and brother, James Scheler of Sacramento, CA.
In addition to Arzetta, his wife of 65 years, Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Louis and Joe; sisters, Lidwina, Amelia and Ruby; grandson, Monty and great-grandson, Adam.
Memorials for Bill Scheler are preferred to Hospice Of The Red River Valley.
